Belgrade has always been a city with rich festival culture. In this city you can find music festivals, but also some cutting-edge art and technology festivals as Resonate, Share conference, Dispatch, October salon…but unfortunately lot of them didn’t had a financial or social sustainability so they disappeared through time. This is a list of 10 art, fashion, technology, design and movie festivals that we like and recommend. But, of course Belgrade offers much more than a few we have mentioned in this article.
Founded by the City of Belgrade, October Salon is an art event featuring actual tendencies in the domain of visual arts. It was established in 1960 as exhibition of the best works in the sphere of fine arts. In 1967 it becomes an important review of current trends in applied arts. With its tradition of more than four decades, the October Salon represents an important segment in the study of modern Serbian art of the second half of 20th century. Today, the Salon is a point of reference of Serbian culture, a representative review of creators in the broad sphere of visual arts and a great exhibition of authors selected by prominent experts in this area. Salon is definitely one of the coolest & the best art events Belgrade has.
In 1971, on the 9th of January, the very first International Film Festival (FEST) under the slogan “A Brave New World” was opened in the Dom Sindikata hall, screening the Robert Altman’s ‘Mash’. Envisioned as the annual review of the best seasonal films, the Belgrade International Film Festival has grown to become one of the most important festivals on the continent and the main event of Belgrade’s cultural life. During all these years, an important feature of FEST is its openness to films from all parts of the world, as well as to all relevant authors and works that would never have the opportunity to be shown in cinemas. Authors as Theo Angelopoulos, Bob Rafelson, Volker Schlondorff , David Cronenberg, Ken Russel, Wim Wenders, Kieslowski, Herzog all had their opportunities to open the festival & present their movies.
Since 1971, the FEST hosted four million visitors and almost 4000 international movies!
Resonate is a platform for networking, knowledge sharing and education. It brings together artists, designers and educators to participate in a forward-looking debate on the position of technology in art and culture. Held each year in Belgrade-Serbia, the festival lasts for three days and provides an overview of current situation in the fields of music, visual arts and digital culture. Guest artists, lecturers and other participants are chosen to represent the cutting edge of the contemporary creative industry in the world.

Founded in 2005, Belgrade Design Week is the first festival of creative industries and modern business in Serbia and the South East European region. Topics : design, architecture, art, advertising, branding,etc…..

Having a long tradition of over 20 years, Belgrade summer festival (Belef ) represents one of the most important culture & art events in the city. Starting summer 2012, the manifestation has significantly changed its form and became the “Festival of festivals”, offering unique cultural events during the summer months in Belgrade.
This summer Belgraders and guests of Belgrade enjoyed 14 festivals embraced by this unifying festival, 48 different programs during 72 days, where over 300 artists presented their creations through more than: 30 concerts, 3 film festivals, at least 8 exhibitions, and other numerous cultural events.
Belef presents domestic & foreign artists from many states as : France, Italy, Ireland, Great Britain, Czech Republic, China, USA, Canada, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Hungary, Zimbabwe, Mali, Armenia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina…
Beldocs is very interesting movie festival that presents only documentaries both from Serbia and worldwide. Festival is happening during the month of May first in Belgrade, and then in other Serbian cities and it consists from a few different segments, such as: Serbian Official Program, the International Program, 3D, BELDOCS supports, Kosovo and Metohija in Focus , Out of Competition.
This festival gives opportunity to see some really educative and one of the kind documentaries. It’s not a typical commercial event, but it offers a bunch of cool movies that you never had opportunity to catch anywhere else, such as: Yugoslavia- How ideology moved our collective body, Dragan Wende-West Berlin, Cathedrals of Cultures and similar.
With tradition over 8 years, the Belgrade Dance Festival (BDF) has become one of the most exciting cultural events in the city. Arrival of the renowned ballet and modern dance groups, renowned choreographer and current productions resulted in the formation of a new audience & in establishing pf high standards when it comes to art of dance. Quality program & good communication with local and international media, made the position of Belgrade prestigious on the European festival & dance map.
When it comes to Belgrade Jazz festival any special introduction would be sufficient. Mister Miles Davis performed three times here and that says enough about tradition & prestige of BJF. It is taking place every year in space of Dom Omladine & Sava Centar halls. Jazz fans can by tickets on-line. The BJF is surely one of the most important music events in Belgrade.
Belgrade Fashion Week
Belgrade Fashion Week is one of the most trendy events in the city. It’s quite cool to actually be in the first lines. So…you may meet many of kinds of people there. It’s a kind of must-attend event.
Belgrade Fashion Week is organized twice a year: at the end of October and in the middle of April . There are reviews of many very important Serbian designers and fashion companies, attractive foreign brands from domestic market, talented young fashion designers, students from Faculty of Applied Arts, interesting fashion designers from abroad as well as numerous media at one place.
Mikser festival is the international festival celebrating creativity & innovations. It moved from the “Zitomlin silo” to the magical, neglected, industrial district in the heart of Belgrade, called “Savamala”. It offers art exhibitions, debates, lecturers, workshops & music program. Michael Mayer owner of Cologne’s “Kompakt” label performed once within Mikser festival, among other popular music stars.
