Few people know that the film director Rian Johnson  was shooting  ”The Brothers Bloom” a few years ago in Belgrade. That was the time when stars such as Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo walked the streets of our city. However, this is all in the past for Johnson who tackled the faraway world of tomorrow in the new film “Looper”, engaging new and attractive stars.

Time travel is no longer just a dream in Johnson’s vision of the future. The assassin played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets hired by criminals from the year of 2074 to wait for the victim at the particular hour sent from the future, fire a single bullet from a rifle and get rid of the body. The payout is huge, drugs and sex are ubiquitous, but hedonism is limited. Namely, each of thus engaged people performs executions until  their older selves arrive from the future. Problems arise when Joe doesn’t manage to kill the older self, played routinely by Bruce Willis, because such escape from fate is prevented by the  leader of the underworld, Abe (Jeff Daniels), which initiates a chase after the young and the old Joe, co-existing at the same time at this point.

If  you  got a headache from all this, there is nothing to worry about – “Looper” could not have been designed without parallel universes in physics, and science has long known the famous saying: If you think that you’ve understood the theory of relativity, you haven’t understood the theory of relativity. Therefore let us consider those aspects of the film that have made Johnson’s  brain teaser one of  the most acclaimed films of the year.

It’s important to notice that this American film director above all wished to create an art film, although the genre is science fiction which is often a slave to mainstream in the world of cinema.  Had the scenario, also signed by Johnson, been even slightly different, its  art house epithet  could have been justified by the small budget preventing explosive fun. However, with realistic cinematography, bare sets and bloody brutality it is clear that “Looper” was intentionally and successfully based on off- Hollywood style and a story about relationships, intimacy and love.

For example, each of the film characters has existential and social problems, the dissection of which helps Johnson’s  commitment to drama step forth. Sara (Emily Blunt) and her son (Pierce Gagnon), the characters that appear when Joe seeks shelter on their farm, are the best to demonstrate this and have been created and played masterfully. It is thanks to them and to the older version of Joe that the battle for profit and debauchery is replaced by a carefully crafted, brilliantly framed as well as interesting quest for the meaning of life.

“And then I saw it”, says young Joe in the film. „I saw a mum who would die for her son. A man who would kill for his wife. A boy angry and alone. Lay down and frightened. The bad path, I saw it. And the path was a circle. Round and round. So I changed it.“

In other words, the world and the  reality correlated to it are valuable just to the extent of the feelings and the willingness to make sacrifices for other people. Placed in the right intimate position of the author and without any excess in pathos, the film “Looper” presented the journey and the change of  an anti-hero, thus also modifying the grey of a cinematographic autumn. Thanks to the excellent film direction and the brave implementations, a small film was given to the SF genre shining with an intelligent and inspired story. Hurry up to the cinemas!

 

Filmska kritika: Looper

Malo ljudi zna da je reditelj Rian Johnson pre nekoliko godina snimao film The Brothers Bloom u Beogradu. Tada su ulicama našeg grada šetale zvezde kakve su Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody i Mark Ruffalo. Sve je to, međutim, prošlost za Johnsona koji se filmom Looper, s novim atraktivnim zvezdama, pozabavio dalekim svetom sutrašnjice.

Putovanje kroz vreme u Johnsonovoj viziji budućnosti više nije samo san. Ubicu, kog tumači Joseph Gordon-Levitt, kriminalci iz 2074. godine angažovali su u prošlosti da u određeno vreme sačeka žrtvu poslatu iz budućnosti, ispali jedan metak iz puške i otarasi se tela. Isplata je velika, droga i seks sveprisutni, ali je hedonizam ograničen. Naime, svaki od ovako uposlenih ljudi, bavi se egzekutorskim poslom dok iz budućnosti za egzekuciju ne pristigne starija verzija njega samog. Problemi nastaju kada Joe ne uspeva da ubije vremešnog sebe, kog rutinski tumači Bruce Willis, jer takav beg od sudbine ne dozvoljava vođa podzemlja Abe (Jeff Daniels), zbog čega počinje hajka na mlađeg i starijeg Joea, koji sada egzistiraju u istoj vremenskoj ravni.

Ukoliko vas od svega ovoga boli glava, ništa ne brinite – Looper ne bi mogao biti osmišljen bez paralelnih univerzuma fizike, a nauci je već odavno poznata čuvena izreka: ako mislite da ste shvatili teoriju realitiviteta, niste shvatili teoriju realitiviteta. Pozabavimo se zato onim filmskim aspektima, koji su od Johnsonove mozgalice napravili jedan od najhvaljenijih filmova godine.

Važno je primetiti da je ovaj američki reditelj želeo da stvori, pre svega, umetnički film, iako je reč o SF žanru koji u svetu kinematografije često robuje mainstream spektaklu. Da je scenario, koji je Johnson takođe potpisao, imalo drugačiji, epitet umetničkog mogao bi se pravdati time što je mali budžet onemogućio eksplozivnu zabavu. Međutim, s realističnom fotografijom, ogoljenom scenografijom i krvavim brutalnostima, jasno je da je Looper namerno i uspešno sazdan na off-holywood stilu i priči o međuljudskim odnosima, intimnosti i ljubavi.

Svaki od aktera filma, na primer, ima egzistencijalne i socijalne probleme, čijim seciranjem u prvi plan izbija Johnsonova posvećenost drami. Sara (Emily Blunt) i njen sin (Pierce Gagnon), likovi koji se pojavljuju kada Joe potraži sklonište na njihovoj farmi, to najbolje dokazuju, i maestralno su napisani i odglumljeni. Zahvaljujući njima i vremešnoj verziji Joa, bitku za profit i razuzdanost zamenjuje pažljivo osmišljena, sjajno kadrirana i zanimljiva potraga za smislom u životu.

Svet i sa njim povezana realnost, drugim rečima, vrede onoliko koliko ima  osećanja i spremnosti na žrtvovanje zbog drugih ljudi. Pozicioniran na pravo intimno autorsko mesto i bez i malo patetike, film Looper je prikazao putovanje i promenu jednog antijunaka, menjajući, pri tom, i sivilo filmske jeseni. Zahvaljujući odličnoj režiji i hrabroj realizaciji, jedan mali film podaren je žanru naučne fantastike koja blista u  pametnoj i nadahnutoj priči. Požurite u bioskop!
