Vesna Perunovic Opens “Method to Madness” Exhibition at DOTS Gallery Belgrade

METHOD TO MADNESS
Gestures of Resilience: Making. Unmaking. Remaking.

May 21 – July 7, 2026

Internationally acclaimed Canadian-Serbian artist Vesna Perunović presents her new exhibition Method to Madness, opening on May 21 at Galerija DOTS in Belgrade.

This new body of work continues her long-term exploration of borders, migration, identity, and belonging. The exhibition is curated by Mirjana Dušić and Ljuba Jovićević, with catalogue design by Isidora M. Nikolić and text by Leonida Kovač.

Method to Madness is grounded in an artistic methodology of recording, repetition, accumulation, fragmentation, and integration—processes traditionally associated with women’s domestic labor. Through these approaches, the artist reflects on contemporary political and social realities, opening space for dialogue on transparency, communication, and boundaries.

The works emphasize obsessive, detailed, structured, and manually intensive processes, often linked to traditional female handicraft. In doing so, they expand interpretations and deepen discourse around limits, visibility, and connection.

The exhibition offers a contemplative alternative to today’s chaotic reality, addressing themes of isolation, vulnerability, division, human rights, and belonging. Perunović’s practice consistently builds a poetic tension between creation and destruction, darkness and light, beauty and fragility—dualities further intensified in this cycle.

Through carefully constructed forms, the artist transforms the everyday into the monumental, suggesting that within processes of deconstruction and renewal lies the potential for resilience, healing, and collective transformation.

Recognized for her multidisciplinary practice—spanning performance, installation, drawing, video, and textile—Perunović has exhibited across Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has presented work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, international biennials, and her works are held in significant museum collections.

The exhibition Method to Madness at DOTS Gallery runs until July 7, 2026.

About the Artist

Perunović’s work emerges from a deeply personal and transnational context shaped by her experience of immigration from the former Yugoslavia to Canada. Her practice reflects the complexity of diasporic identity and the search for belonging within shifting political, cultural, and emotional landscapes.

Working across performance, installation, and socially engaged art, she builds conceptual and material bridges between cultures, emphasizing permeability, mobility, and human connection.

Her work explores tensions between freedom and constraint, intimacy and displacement—experiences shared by those navigating multiple homelands—creating space for dialogue and empathy.

Operating between Canada and Europe, Perunović maintains a large-scale, site-specific, and production-intensive practice involving travel, reconstruction, and reinterpretation. Her sustained engagement with migration, borders, and belonging positions her as a significant voice in contemporary Canadian art.
