Black Country, New Road – one of the most innovative and exciting bands of their generation – will make their Belgrade debut on Wednesday, August 12, at Dorćol Platz, presented by Connected Agency and Honeycomb Live.
Formed in Cambridge in 2018, the band grew into one of the defining acts of London’s celebrated art rock underground, closely associated with the scene around the Windmill in Brixton – the small venue that also nurtured contemporaries like Black Midi and Squid, together seen as redefining the modern alternative landscape. It was a restless, fearless approach to reinventing their sound that fueled their rise and won them major critical and public attention.
Their catalogue traces that evolution: the Mercury Prize-nominated debut For the First Time, the widely praised Ants From Up There, and the live album Live at Bush Hall – records that have steadily pushed the boundaries of contemporary rock.
Just four days before the release of Ants From Up There in February 2022, frontman and lyricist Isaac Wood announced he was leaving the band – a departure that raised real questions about whether BC,NR could continue without the voice that had defined their early identity. Rather than trying to recreate what came before, the remaining six members chose a different path: they stopped performing their old material live and rebuilt the band around collective songwriting and new vocal roles.
That transformation reached its fullest expression on Forever Howlong (2025, Ninja Tune) – arguably the biggest sonic shift of their career. The raw, guitar-driven tension of their earlier work gave way to a warmer tone and folk textures, built on richer vocal interplay between the band’s three lead vocalists: Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery, and May Kershaw.
Their sound today blends folk, progressive rock, baroque pop, chamber music and alternative rock into something both adventurous and deeply emotional, with influences ranging from Joanna Newsom and Randy Newman to Fiona Apple and Janis Ian – while remaining distinctly their own.
Black Country, New Road’s current line-up is: Tyler Hyde (bass, guitars, lead and backing vocals), Lewis Evans (saxophone, flute, lead and backing vocals), Georgia Ellery (violin, mandolin, guitars, lead and backing vocals), May Kershaw (keyboards, piano, accordion, lead and backing vocals), Charlie Wayne (drums, percussion, banjo, backing vocals), and Luke Mark (guitars, backing vocals).
