Orwell: 2+2=5 by Raoul Peck opens the DOK festival

26 February, 7:30 PM | mts Dvorana

The documentary “Orwell: 2+2=5”, directed by Raoul Peck, will ceremonially open the 8th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival DOK on Thursday, 26 February at 7:30 PM, at mts Dvorana.

The film explores the life and work of George Orwell, with a strong focus on the enduring lessons of his most famous novel, 1984. Through Orwell’s political insights, the film examines how his warnings remain strikingly relevant today—particularly in the context of contemporary authoritarian regimes. The narration is delivered by Damian Lewis, speaking from Orwell’s own perspective.

In 1949, George Orwell completed 1984, his final and most influential novel. “Orwell: 2+2=5” delves into the author’s final months and his visionary legacy, tracing the origins of some of the most unsettling concepts he introduced to the world: doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, and the omnipresent shadow of Big Brother.

Using archival photographs, newsreels, film footage, contemporary documentary material, and infamous political speeches, Raoul Peck draws sharp parallels between early 20th-century authoritarianism and today’s global reality. The film reflects on ongoing conflicts that threaten democracy and civil liberties, including the civil war in Myanmar, the Russia–Ukraine war, the U.S. “war on terror,” the war in Gaza, and many other crises shaping our present.

The film had its world premiere in the Cannes Premiere selection at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the prestigious L’Œil d’or award.

🎟️ Tickets are available at the mts Dvorana box office and online.
