Science Meets Nature: Belgrade’s Biggest Open-Air Science Picnic Returns This May

One of Belgrade’s greenest and most inspiring outdoor events is returning this spring. On May 29 and 30, the Festival of Science and the Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade, invite visitors to the beautiful Arboretum for the fourth edition of the Science Picnic — the biggest and most ambitious one so far.

Held under the slogan “Think Green”, this year’s Science Picnic transforms the Arboretum into a large open-air classroom dedicated to sustainability, ecology, innovation, and hands-on scientific exploration. Designed for children, students, families, and curious visitors of all generations, the event aims to make sustainable thinking part of everyday life through interactive experiences, experiments, workshops, performances, and educational programs.

Following a two-year break, the Science Picnic returns with an expanded concept that organizers describe as a true outdoor science festival. Visitors will be able to explore four major program zones: the Field of Innovation, featuring interactive scientific installations; the Garden of Ideas, dedicated to creative workshops for children; the Expertineers program, where school students become science demonstrators themselves; and the Science-Fiction Stage, presenting dynamic live performances and experiments.

Throughout the two-day event, guests will discover how science can help address environmental challenges while also enjoying engaging demonstrations from the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and ecology. The program especially encourages young people to develop critical thinking and awareness about their relationship with nature and the environment.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the spectacular interactive science show Exploding Discoveries by science communicator Milan Popović, featuring exciting demonstrations, scientific phenomena, and stories behind some of history’s most fascinating discoveries and accidents.

This year’s edition also includes workshops focused on recycling and sustainability, organized in collaboration with Ball Corporation and its international initiative Every Can Counts, teaching visitors about the importance of aluminum recycling through fun scientific experiments involving atmospheric pressure, density, and motion.

The event takes place in the unique protected natural environment of the Arboretum of the Faculty of Forestry, a 3.5-hectare botanical and landscape treasure maintained by professors and students of the faculty.

Admission to the Science Picnic is free of charge, while the full program is available on the official website of the Festival of Science and its social media channels.

This year’s Science Picnic is organized with the support of partners including Yettel, Erste Bank, McDonald’s Serbia, National Geographic Serbia, and the Embassy of Germany in Belgrade.
