In the five years since it’s beginnings, Dimensions has grown to be a mecca for electronic aficionados the world over. Marking this birthday with their most comprehensive edition to date, Dimensions welcomes premier names from house, techno, disco, bass, soul, funk, and left-field genres to their fortress home.
With the full line-up announced, Dimensions can now reveal the day-to-day program for full festival days, including sets from Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers, Massive Attack, Kamasi Washington, Moodymann, Moritz von Oswald Trio with Tony Allen and Max Loderbaue and more; as well as stage takeovers and artist additions. With tickets set to sell out in record time, anyone who wants to be a part of the fifth birthday should move quickly.
ARTISTS // Opening concert – 24th August 2016 Massive Attack – Kamasi Washington – Moodymann For this very special fifth birth edition, Dimensions Festival have bought together some of the worlds most ground-breaking artists to play in Pula’s 2,000 year old amphitheatre home. Massive Attack will play their very first Croatian show in years, whilst Brainfeeder affiliate and saxophonist Kamasi Washington has been revealed to join Massive Attack at the epic concert, with recent merits including features on Kendrick Lamar’s TPAB, and the 2016 American Music Prize for his latest album ‘The Epic.’ Making this opening the most magical to date, Chicago poster-boy and Dimensions family Moodymann is the final artist to complete the bill for this unreal spectacle.
Festival Artists Full line-up and stage breakdown below Aside from an exclusive headline set from the original Chicago don Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers, the Dimensions crew have pulled out all the stops to bring an unmissable line up to the Croatian coast this year. Octave One will push the boundaries between funk, soul and techno in one of their groundbreaking performances, whilst Richie Hawtin will be taking care of the iconic Moat arena with a special extended set comprised of 100% techno heat. Across five days also find Chicago veteran Ron Trent, Phantasy sound crusader Daniel Avery, elusive Norwegian selectors DJ Fett Burger & DJ Sotofett as Sex Tags Mania, as well as Midland, who’ll venture between disco, funk soul and classic house sounds in one of his all-star sets. Mosaic Records boss Steve O’Sullivan joins, as well as explorative electronic duo Darkstar and Detroit icon Mike Huckaby. Pushing the limits of Dimensions world-class sound systems will be dub connoisseur The Bug joined by the celebrated Israeli MC Miss Red. Flipping to the murkier depths of bass music is Swamp81 poster boy Loefah, and long-term Deviation party-starter Benji B. Bringing a fresh injection of techno are Petar Dundov and Munich based crew Zenker Brothers, whilst Italo disco vibes come from Intergalactic Gary and golden sounds from groove-masters Derek Plaslaiko and Dan Shake. Catch something a little different from Dele Sosimi with his afrobeat orchestra, Swedish summer jams from Mount Liberation Unlimited and seamless selections from Croatia’s own llija Rudman, Seiji Tapes and Miss Sunshine.
Completing the Dimensions family are swag-lord Sam Binga, NTS Radio’s first lady Beatrice Dillion, Echocord’s Kenneth Christiansen and Fila Brazilla founder Steve Cobby, plus sets and takeovers from friends new and old including United VIibrations, Danny Scrilla, Rhythm Section Contours, Fixate, Cuisine Dub, Mimi, Labud, Ganik, Novell, Leftfoot, Gilla, The Menendez Brothers, Al Zander, Joe Rolet, Barry Smyth, Andwot and Marshmello. All of this is in addition to the huge eighty names already announced, from Massive Attack performing at the opening scenes, to live shows from Hiatus Kaiyote and experimental multi-instrumental group the Moritz von Oswald Trio with Tony Allen and Max Loderbaue, as well as techno dons Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann and Rødhåd. On top of all of this, festival goers can find more mind-bending genre explorations in the shape of Hessle Audio, Calibre and more. Touching on the bassier side of electronica, DnB, footwork and dub Mala, DJ Spinn and Alix Perez, all ready to explore darker corners of club music, and Dimensions wouldn’t be Dimensions without it’s fair share of explorative, avant-garde artists, whether boundary breaking live acts or DJs dabbling in more breakthrough, leftfield or revival genres. Repping for outsider and world sounds are Awesome Tapes From Africa, the Youssef Kamaal Trio presented by Henry Wu, label / party starters Highlife and Cómeme head honcho Matias Aguayo. Unmissable live sets come from Mim Suleiman, and funk-infused synth Galaxians, not forgetting the headline show from Massive Attack in the historic Pula amphitheatre. Sets from global tastemakers are plentiful, with Dutch party-starter Motor City Drum Ensemble, Ostgut Ton’s first lady Tama Sumo and true-school advocate Jeremy Underground all part of the Dimensions 2016 crew. A special part of the Dimensions 2016 programming plays on revival of the broken beat genre. Pioneers and newcomers of the genre play, including IG Culture, Namebrandsound, Alex Phountzi and EVM 128 all flying the flag for this London UK soul fusion. Building its foundation on a close family of artists, Dimensions is happy to announce the welcome return of the DJs DJs, the crate digging selectors who’ve crafted the Dimensions soundtrack.
