The 60th October Salon, a prominent international visual arts event founded and sponsored by the City of Belgrade and organized by the Cultural Center of Belgrade with support from the Ministry of Culture, will occur from October 20th to December 1st across various locations in Belgrade.
The official opening ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 20th at 6:00 PM at the Museum of African Art (14 Andre Nikolić Street, Senjak).
This year’s Salon is curated by three international curatorial teams, under the slogan What’s Left?
One featured concept, Hope is a Discipline, will be exhibited at the Museum of African Art. It has been developed by Lina Džuverović, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the MA Curating and Collections at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, in collaboration with curators Emilija Epštajn and Ana Knežević from the museum, and visual identity designer Rafaela Dražić.
“The works presented in the Hope is a Discipline segment focus on the definition and contemporary perception of work, the futility of labor, and the connection between labor and art,” said Ana Knežević, curator of the Museum of African Art.
The exhibition curators explained, “Drawing inspiration from activist Mariame Kaba’s slogan Hope is a Discipline, and the legacy of the Non-Aligned Movement, we will collaborate with artists, associations, and grassroots initiatives both within and beyond the cultural sphere. Through this, we aim to present art as a connective tissue in fostering solidarity and mutual support. Artists and collectives will use their creative processes, exhibition opportunities, and discursive programs to explore the potential of subtle micropolitical acts of art as mechanisms for coping with contemporary exploitative and corporate takeovers of life, repressive political trends, and ecological crises.”
The curators emphasize, “A key aspect of this project is its pace, designed to resist the trends of hyper-productivity and acceleration often demanded by large-scale exhibition formats.”
The artists and groups featured in the Hope is a Discipline segment include: Adrian Melis Sosa, Darinka Pop-Mitić, doplgenger, I drugi (And Others): Gendered Politics and Practices of Art Collectives, Jelena Savić, Karavan, Kathrin Böhm and Jelena Micić, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Mvana, Milica Dukić, Milica Ružičić, and the Feminist Duration Reading Group (FDRG).
October Salon for the Young – Sundays at MAU
Every Sunday from October 27th to December 1st, between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM, the museum will host its regular program Sunday at MAU, which will include guided tours for adults and creative workshops for children aged 6 to 12.
The creative workshops, titled Poster Rollercoaster, will focus on the medium of posters. After exploring the small gallery and the works of Angolan artist Kiluanji Kia Henda, children will have the opportunity to create their own “engaged” posters, while adults will learn more about the works of other artists exhibiting at the October Salon, such as Adrian Melis, Daniela Ortiz, Darinka Pop-Mitić, and doplgenger.
